"In Sync with The Universe" (The 3/4 Roll Commitment)

Ok.. it's official ....I'm starting over...as far "proper release" and ball roll

After speaking with Dannial Cohen, whom advised me that I will have to decide “one way or the other” as far as being either a full-roller or ¾ roller…and not mix it up, I have made the commitment to go ¾ roll…and not go back.

I went and practiced Monday, and actually was able to average about 200 for 4 games… including the last game being a “clean” 244…and it was kinda exciting. There was only 1 shot in 4 games that hit my thumbhole...so I think I am making a little progress. Also, my thumb does not hurt at all now... which is totally amazing...and it feels GREAT to not have to put all of the skin protection glue and padding over my thumb from squeezing with the full roll thing.. :-)

Also - Mr. Mo (Mo Rich) Pinel told me, “…If “full-roller bowlers could average in the higher 220s, or 230s, then there would be a more of them out there… but there aren’t!” Then he added…“If you want to improve, and become a higher average bowler, then you have to go to the ¾ roll …and then you’ll be in sync with the Universe!”

I didn’t understand the “in sync with the Universe" thing at first, but after speaking with Dannial Cohen and Tony Haynes… they explained that it means that for today’s game; lane conditions and the different drillings and layouts available, the ¾ release matches up best for today’s balls and lane conditions.

Anyway - I will use the ¾ roll Tuesday Night (Oct 27) in League, and see how it all goes.

Well I had a very interesting weekend by bowling in the Friday Night Shootout league (very tough oil pattern), and also tried a tournament on the same condition over the weekend.

I bowled 665 Friday night... which pretty good considering the shot, and made money in my brackets too. I also shot decent Sunday at a local tournament on that same condition to end with 659...

I found out that if I just bowl the way I use to bowl when I was "full-rolling" BUT simply keep my thumb relaxed -- and not "squeeze"... my release allows the ball to roll 3/4 anyway…and that’s great!!!!

BTW - The 3/4 roll thing is fine... but I am still not "feeling" confident at all when I release the ball. I am only able to roll the ball to an area...where as before, I was able to actually "HIT" a spot...or target on the lanes.

Nov 17 --

Struggled all night on an easy shot...and barely shot 500 (507). I think I missed about 4 single pin spares tonight...along with 6 splits. There's really NO excuse for this...so I just have to look at it as having a really terrible night bowling.

...craaaaazy ---- I am only averaging about 195 in both of the leagues I am bowling in...and since I don't get to practice much now... things may not get better for a while. The only positive thing is that I guess I will have plenty of HDCP for the next yr. season...LOL.

oh well...

Well, tonight I tried my first night on a hard pattern on Friday Night’s Forest Park league. We had a double shift, so I opted to only bowl the 2nd shift since the lanes would have broken down…and I don’t really have anything that aggressive yet for heavy oil patterns.

Anyway – I was able to bowl a reasonable 553, but I did miss 3 or 4 spares that I normally would have gotten. The first game out I actually shot 219, but after that… I was not striking much at all. For the most part … I did ok. I was actually the highest on my pair, so when the lanes are “burnt” scoring is all relative…plus my team took 4 games…. So I’m definitely ok with that.

3/4 roll - 3rd week - Tuesday, November 10, 2009

I shot decent tonight with the new ¾ roll to finish with 645. The lanes were kinda dry again, but because I don’t have a ball aggressively drilled (yet), everything worked out.

I plan on trying to bowl at least 1 shift on Friday at Forest Park on a very tough pattern…and I must admit I do have some concerns about not being properly “armed” to handle the extra oil and length of that league pattern. I may just have to scuff the ball up…and just try my best to keep my speed down….

Anyway – we’ll see.

2nd week using the 3/4 roll...and my scores were pretty low tonight. Funny thing is that I actually didn't bowl that badly...but did get quite a few splits over the 3game set. I ended with 551… but the highest set for the night on my pair was 607. My team was on lanes 1&2...so it was very hard (for me) to keep the ball right of the 1 pin.

Oh well... I'll just keep practicing and be patient. I was told that it will be like starting over as far as learning adjustments… and also I only have 1 ball to primarily use (for now). When I get consistent with the 3/4 roll, then I will get some equipment for different lane conditions.

Well... I bowled Tuesday, and I shot 648 with the "new" 3/4 release...and that was with me with getting a pocket split in the 10th frame of the last game. So, you can't really argue with results...lol. I am actually excited again...and look forward to learning more and more. I have actually NEVER seen as much pin reaction as I have been seeing with this "in sync" 3/4 roll thing.

I can't believe it took me so long to "step out" of my old comfort zone and start LEARNING how to bowl "for real".

I will keep practicing...and post up new progress next week. :-)
