Bowling 200 Community - Forums and Videos for bowlers

Some of you have invested a good amount of money into your bowling equipment, BUT many of you (including myself), have not maintained the gear you have like you should. I hear bowlers complain about their balls being “dead” all of the time, and that their bowling balls don’t hook like they did when they were new. I have even heard Isom Hawes (one of the very best bowlers in the state of GA) say that he had over 60 bowling balls at home, but most of them were “dead”. So yes – “Dead-Ball Syndrome” is VERY real.

Balls Do Lose Their Hook - By Ebonite International Ball Design Engineer Ronald Hickland

The following graphs compare a ball after 100 games of use with a brand new ball, using the same surface, layout and static weights.

The difference in length between the two balls is less than a foot. These results indicate that the ball with 100 games hooked slightly earlier but not as much overall as the new ball. The backend value difference is 2.6 inches, the equivalent of striking versus leaving the washout.

Why does the ball die?

Well – The new bowling balls are designed to be like sponges when it comes to oil. They absorb the oil from the lane
, and it builds, and builds, and basically “jams-up” up the track area of the ball. Actually, there’s a LOT more technical stuff happening, but you get the point.

Think of it like this-

When you press your finger into a sponge that’s almost full of water, the water travels to the surface and collects around your finger. The same is true for a reactive or particle bowling ball. When the ball is rolled down the lane, the contact area is very small. As the ball is delivered, more and more plasticizer slowly migrates toward the surface in the track area.

Ok – enough of the tech talk. To overcome this “dead-ball” thing - I personally have started using a program that the Pro Shop I go to; Striking Results calls “The Maintenance Package” which is basically a continuance protection program of your bowling balls for Oil Removal and professional cleaning. I use it for 2 balls I have; Columbia Resurgence and an Ebonite Total NV - both balls REALLY soak up a lot of oil. Has it helped? Definitely – My last 4 league/tournament scratch scores: 649, 700, 746, & 638, and my book average is only 160 - so YES it works!!! J

The Striking Results Maintenance PackageIncludes
· Basic cleaning every 30 games
· Oil removal every 60 games (ball reacts like it’s new again)

The price for this package starts at only $25 for 3 months of professional ball maintenance.

I want to give a update on my maintenance program pricing.I have a 3 month program for $25,6 month for $40 and for one year $55.There is no limit on the balls you can have done as long as they are your balls. You can bring them in every 30 games for a basic cleaning and every 60 games for oil removal. This process really works and usbc did some testing to prove oil removal does revive the hook of your bowling ball.

I have taken advantage of the ball maintenance program. My summer average has increased 10 points above my winter average so there has to be some credit to the program.

Just as an update...

I realized today that I have shot (2) 300 games, (2) 299 games, (4) 289 games, and I have honestly lost count of the 279 games (at least 8 or 9) ...all within the last 10 months. ...and now you're probaly thinkin, "...yeah, whatever Chase, so what's your point?"

The Point? Glad you asked...LOL. Well, I can honestly say that ALL of those high games (except 1 of the 289 games) happened right after I had gotten my ball back from Dannial over at Striking Results when he had the oil removed, and cleaned up my balls.

So - the point is... there is REALLY something to keeping your balls in top condition if you expect to win. I believe it gives all bowlers a better edge and potential to shoot great scores.
