Bowling 200 Community - Forums and Videos for bowlers

I have been having a LOT of problems with my thumb swelling - causing me not to be able to get out of the ball cleanly, and 2 different Pro Shops are saying that I really should consider getting the Switch Grip System... but I hear that they break a lot, etc. So now, I am considering having all 7 of my bowling balls done this week...BUT, last night Jhamall McGaughy and Jack Jackson (2 great local bowlers that I really respect) said..."NO", maybe only get 1 ball done, or just have my holes opened up a little and use tape.

Does anyone here use the Switch Grip system...and if you do….

What is it like, and does it hold up?

Thanks,

Chase

Well Chase I don't use them personally but I was very interested in them....but overall I went with slugs. The main concern for me was the breaking thing I throw my strike ball 19.5 mph and it would be likely that my style wouldn't work with that system. So I agree with your friends.....NO!

Finally made the decision to get the new "switch grip" system installed in 2 balls... and the pro shop spent a lot of time to get my thumb fit for the main insert "just right (before any swelling)"

Dannial Cohen installed it...and as soon as I bowled, i threw 15 strikes in a row lol ... switching between 2 balls… The system really...really works. I have the EXACT SAME FIT for 2 balls now... with absolutely NO difference in the feel of the balls. Now, I am just hoping the thing won't BREAK...lol.

Time will tell… but I am definitely getting a duplicate "back-up" insert made of each size… just in case… :)

Chase,
I changed over to the switch grips a couple of years ago was very happy with them. Dannial installed them for me at that time. I stopped using them for a variety of reasons. I never personally experienced a breakage but did experience two other bowlers that had them come out. That made me leary. The second reason was at nationals when you have to go through the ball weigh in, you have to move the grip to each ball. When carrying 6 balls, that gets old in a hurry. The other thing that was probably the final issue for me was that when getting new balls drilled, there was some difficulty in getting the depth of the outer sleeve the same as the previous balls if the pro shop had the drill bit sharpened and did not compensate for the loss of material on the drill bit. This created an insert that was either too high or too low. All in all the inserts worked fine for me but they got to be bothersome.

Chase, I use them and like them alot, but I have had a break or two. Switch Grip has beefed them up alot since I have broke one. The site says to only use them for a certian amount of games. I am so picky about how my thumb feels I won't bowl without them. Same feel in every ball. Leigh is right, the pro shop has to pay close attention to the depth of the outer sleeve. As for Nationals, it's only once a year and i try to keep about three or four inners. Some think this system is a hassel, but I will sacrifice for the same feel in every ball.

There is another system that looks like a better set up as far as breaking goes, but I forgot the name.

You thinking of the Vise IT? http://www.viseinserts.com/it.html

I've been using Switch Grips for a few weeks now, also had them set up by Dannial. Definitely liking them so far. I have one insert that is the newest style, and it certainly appears a bit beefier than the old inserts. Dannial did advise me to check that the insert is fully seated each time I get prepared to throw the ball though, probably a good habbit to get into with these.

Thanks Jeff and Randy.

I now have 5 balls with it, and it has been working out great - so far, no breaks or problems. But, one weird thing did happen about 2 or 3 weeks ago. I had been bowling with my Columbia Resurgence, and the inner sleeve actually got stuck inside (lol)...and I could not get the dang thing out. Crazy. Dannial did make an adjustment the next day...and he asked, "has that ever happened before?", and I told him NO!... this is the first time. I guess it was an isolated thing...maybe temperature related or something...who knows. But the system is really great.
